The Islander 34 also known as Islander 34 Mk I is a sailboat designed by the maritime architect J. H. McGlasson in the mid sixties. Only a few boats have been produced. The Islander 34 is built by the American yard Wayfarer Yacht Corp..

Hull

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 114.0 liter fresh water capacity.

Rig

Rig of Islander 34 anno 1969. Our Islander 34 sailed from USin 2000 and sailed around some of the Islands in the Western South Pacific around 2020. We were told it was completed in 1978 but hull appears to be mk1 pre 1972

The Islander 34 is built with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Keel

Fin keel

The Islander 34 is built with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.37 - 1.47 meter (4.49 - 4.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Engine

Islander 34 may be equipped with an inboard Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine at 30 hp (22 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.3 knots

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 132.0 liters (34 US gallons, 29 imperial gallons).
