Review of Daring

Basic specs.

sail specifications
The Daring is a small sailing dinghy designed by the British maritime architect Bill O'Brien in the mid fifties. Less than 100 boats have been built.

The Daring is a racing dinghy with built-in buoyancy for righting by the crew.

Here we would have liked to show you nice photos of the Daring.

Hull

The hull is made of plywood.

The hull has chines which can provide increased initial stability. This means that the boat will resist rolling side to side, especially when at rest or cruising at slower speed. The chines can also help spray outwards keeping the deck drier when underway.

Interior

Note: the boat has also been sold to be home-completed, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

Rig

The Daring is built with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a gennaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Keel

CentreBoard

The Daring is built with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

Immersion rate

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Daring is about 43 kg/cm, alternatively 245 lbs/inch.
Meaning: if you load 43 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 245 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

L/B (Length Beam Ratio)

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

The l/b ratio for Daring is 2.83.

Wide Slim 73% 0 50 100
Compared with other similar dinghies it is slimmer than 73% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a slightly more speedy hull design.

Maintenance

Keel Inspection

Keels with moving parts need to be inspected and maintained on a regular basis according to advice given in owner's manual. Manufacturers usually advise which maintenance work can be done by the owner and which work should be carried out by a suitably experienced boatyard.

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.
