The Astus 16.1 is a small trimaran designed by the French maritime architect Stéphan Vallet in the mid 2010. The Astus 16.1 is built by the French yard Astusboats.

Hull

The hull is made of fibreglass. A hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

Rig

The Astus 16.1 is built with a fractional rig. The sail area for the mailsail + jib is 17.2 m² (185.1 ft²). A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a gennaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Keel

CentreBoard

The Astus 16.1 is built with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.25 - 0.35 meter (0.82 - 1.12 ft) dependent of the load.

Engine

The boat may be equipped with an engine at 4 hp (2 kW)..

Sailing characteristics

Astus 16.1 holds two CE certifications:

If less than 3 in on board the boat is by European Union certified as Class C. INSHORE:

Designed for voyages in coastal waters, large bays, estuaries, lakes and rivers where conditions up to, and including, wind force 6 (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights up to, and including, 2 m may be experienced.

If less than 5 in on board the boat is by European Union certified as Class D. SHELTERED WATERS:

Designed for voyages on sheltered coastal waters, small bays, small lakes, rivers and canals when conditions up to, and including, wind force 4 (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights up to, and including, 0,3 m may be experienced, with occasional waves of 0,5 m maximum height, for example from passing vessels.
